Article 11 — The Strategic Mind
Strategy is the art of acting when other intelligent beings are also acting.
A strategist must consider not only reality but the expectations of others.
Recursive Reasoning
A basic thinker asks:
“What will they do?”
A stronger strategist asks:
“What do they think I will do?”
A more advanced strategist asks:
“What do they think I think they will do?”
This recursion can continue.
A superhuman strategist could potentially reason through many levels.
The Strategic Advantage
Such a person could excel in negotiations, organizations, diplomacy, games, and competitive environments.
But strategy is not merely manipulation.
Good strategy also requires understanding incentives.
If people benefit from cooperating, cooperation may be superior to domination.
The Strategic Paradox
A perfect strategist might discover that the best strategy is sometimes to abandon strategy.
Over-optimization can create rigidity.
The most powerful strategist may therefore be someone capable of switching between calculation and simplicity.
