Imagine a future population in which a particular genetic variant produces exceptional metabolic efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first it is rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps one person in several million possesses it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over generations, circumstances favor the trait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its frequency increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, millions of people carry it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The original “mutant” has become ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
