They understand human behavior statistically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their internal experience may become difficult for ordinary people to comprehend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The individual remains biologically human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But their mental world has become alien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Communication becomes increasingly difficult as cognitive differences grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A genius may need to simplify explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But simplification can hide important nuances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, the person may require entirely new symbolic systems to communicate their thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A new intellectual language could emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The alien-intelligence problem does not require extraterrestrials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Humanity could create cognitive differences large enough to produce something functionally similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Genetic modification, education, neural interfaces, artificial intelligence, and other technologies could gradually produce minds operating at radically different cognitive scales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If intelligence increases dramatically, does the enhanced individual become a better human?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not necessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They become a different kind of human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Humanity has traditionally defined itself through shared limitations: limited memory, limited lifespan, limited perception, limited knowledge, limited physical ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Remove enough of those limitations and identity itself becomes unstable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first true superhuman may therefore not be the person who can lift a mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
