ARTICLE 32 — BENEFICIAL MUTATIONS AND HUMAN EVOLUTION

Evolution does not move toward perfection.

It responds to circumstances.

A trait that improves survival or reproduction in one environment can become disadvantageous after the environment changes.

This makes beneficial mutation a dynamic concept.

The Environment Chooses the Meaning

Consider a hypothetical human population living at extreme altitude.

Individuals with physiological traits that improve oxygen utilization could have an advantage.

But transport the same population into a radically different environment and the advantage might diminish.

Evolution is therefore relational.

The organism and environment form a system.

Human Evolution Is Ongoing

Humans are sometimes described as though evolution stopped once civilization appeared.

It did not.

Human populations continue to experience mutation, selection, migration, genetic drift, and other evolutionary processes.

Civilization, however, changes the selective environment.

Medicine can allow individuals with conditions that might once have reduced survival to live longer.

Agriculture changes nutrition.

Urban environments alter exposure to pathogens.

Technology reduces certain environmental pressures while creating new ones.

The Emerging Outlier

Imagine a future population in which a particular genetic variant produces exceptional metabolic efficiency.

At first it is rare.

Perhaps one person in several million possesses it.

Over generations, circumstances favor the trait.

Its frequency increases.

Eventually, millions of people carry it.

The original “mutant” has become ordinary.

This demonstrates a fundamental evolutionary principle:

today’s unusual trait can become tomorrow’s normal trait.

The Direction of Human Evolution

There is no single predetermined direction.

Humanity could become more resistant to particular diseases, better adapted to certain environments, or increasingly influenced by deliberate genetic engineering.

The future human may be shaped by both natural evolutionary forces and technological choices.

That would create an unprecedented situation.

For most of evolutionary history, humans did not consciously determine the direction of their own genetic evolution.

A technologically advanced civilization could begin to participate directly.

The question would no longer be merely:

“What traits will survive?”

It could become:

“Which traits do we want future humans to possess?”

That question belongs simultaneously to biology, ethics, politics, and philosophy.
