Birth Order, Family Dynamics, and Exceptional Achievement
Charles Darwin was the fifth of six children. Benjamin Franklin was the fifteenth of seventeen. Albert Einstein was a firstborn, as was Marie Curie. The scattered pattern of birth-order positions among history’s most celebrated intellectual figures should, on its own, be a warning sign against any simple, deterministic claim that birth order straightforwardly determines the likelihood of exceptional achievement — and yet birth order remains one of the most persistently studied, and most persistently contested, variables in the broader psychology of individual differences and achievement.
The Origin of Birth Order Research: Adler and Beyond
Interest in birth order as a psychologically meaningful variable dates back to early twentieth-century psychoanalyst Alfred Adler, who proposed, based primarily on clinical observation rather than large-sample quantitative research, that a child’s position within the family — firstborn, middle child, youngest, or only child — created a distinctive psychological environment and set of sibling dynamics likely to shape personality development in broadly predictable ways. Adler’s original theorizing proposed firstborns as more likely to develop achievement-oriented, authority-respecting personalities due to an initial period as an only child followed by a “dethronement” upon a younger sibling’s birth, while later-born children, competing for parental attention and resources already partly claimed by an older sibling, might develop more rebellious, unconventional, or socially oriented strategies for establishing their own distinct identity and securing attention within the family system.
Sulloway’s Influential and Controversial Synthesis
The most extensive and influential modern treatment of this hypothesis came from historian of science Frank Sulloway’s 1996 book Born to Rebel, which combined Darwinian evolutionary reasoning about sibling competition for finite parental resources with an enormous dataset of historical figures’ documented birth order and their relative embrace or rejection of scientific and social innovations throughout history. Sulloway’s central and most widely discussed claim was that later-born children were significantly more likely than firstborns to support radical scientific and social revolutions during their own historical era — his analysis found, for instance, that later-born scientists were considerably more likely to have quickly embraced Darwin’s own theory of evolution by natural selection upon its initial publication, a theory itself proposed by a later-born (fifth of six) scientist, while firstborn scientists showed greater average resistance to the new and at-the-time highly controversial theory.
Sulloway’s book received substantial popular and some scholarly attention upon publication, but it has faced serious and sustained methodological criticism in the decades since, a critical reception that offers an instructive parallel to several other overextended popular psychological claims examined throughout this series. Critics, including a detailed and influential critical reanalysis published by researchers Fenson and Bock among others, raised concerns about potential confirmation bias in how historical figures’ embrace or rejection of specific scientific ideas was coded and classified, the considerable difficulty of establishing reliable birth-order data and family-structure details for many historical figures documented centuries ago, and, more fundamentally, whether the specific historical case studies Sulloway selected for detailed analysis may have been disproportionately drawn from examples that fit his hypothesis, rather than representing a genuinely comprehensive and unbiased historical sample.
The Larger, More Rigorous Modern Studies: Mostly Null Results
Given the limitations of historical case-study approaches like Sulloway’s, more recent birth order research has increasingly turned to large, contemporary survey and psychometric datasets that allow more rigorous statistical control for confounding variables like family size and socioeconomic status, both of which independently correlate with birth order in ways that could otherwise produce spurious associations. The results of this more rigorous modern research have been considerably less supportive of strong birth-order personality effects than either Adler’s original theorizing or Sulloway’s later synthesis proposed.
A particularly large and methodologically well-regarded 2015 study led by Julia Rohrer, analyzing data from over 20,000 individuals across three large, nationally representative datasets from Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States, found no meaningful birth-order effects on any of the Big Five personality traits, including openness to experience — the trait most consistently associated with creative and intellectual achievement throughout this series’ other articles. The same study did find a small but statistically significant effect of birth order on measured IQ, with firstborns scoring on average very slightly higher than later-born siblings — but the effect size was notably small (on the order of one to two IQ points), and the researchers specifically attributed this modest effect not to any inherent psychological or biological consequence of birth order itself, but to a well-established and independently documented pattern in which parental resources, attention, and particularly verbal engagement, per the early-childhood-environment research on linguistic input discussed elsewhere in this series, tend to be somewhat more concentrated on a firstborn child during their earliest developmental years, before being subsequently divided among additional children as a family grows.
The Resource Dilution Model
This resource-based explanation connects to what researchers call the “resource dilution model” of birth order and family size effects, a framework independently supported by a substantial body of research on family size and its measured, generally modest negative correlation with average per-child educational and cognitive outcomes across large families — the underlying and largely uncontroversial mechanism being that finite parental time, attention, financial resources, and household educational materials must be divided among a larger number of children in bigger families, with earlier-born children in any given family typically receiving a larger, less-divided share of these finite resources during their earliest and most developmentally sensitive years before subsequent siblings arrive and require their own share of the same finite family resources.
It’s worth noting explicitly that this resource dilution effect, while real and independently documented across multiple large studies, is generally found to be quite modest in magnitude at the individual level, and operates as a population-level statistical tendency rather than a reliable predictor of any specific individual’s outcomes — consistent with the observation that stood at this article’s opening, that history’s most eminent achievers are found across every birth-order position in roughly the proportions that basic demographic distribution would predict, once family size and other confounding variables are appropriately accounted for.
Only Children: Debunking a Different Persistent Myth
A closely related and similarly persistent popular belief concerns only children, long stereotyped in popular culture as more likely to be spoiled, socially maladjusted, or conversely — in a competing and equally common stereotype — unusually academically accomplished due to receiving the full, undivided attention of both parents. The empirical research on only children, including a substantial meta-analytic review led by psychologist Toni Falbo, has found that only children do not differ meaningfully from children with siblings on most measured personality and social adjustment dimensions, though they do show a modest advantage on some measures of achievement motivation and, consistent with the resource dilution model discussed above, on average cognitive test performance — again a modest, population-level statistical tendency rather than evidence of a large or individually reliable effect, and not remotely sufficient to support the more dramatic and largely unfounded “spoiled only child” stereotype that continues to circulate widely in popular culture despite the accumulated research evidence against it.
Sibling Deidentification: A More Robust and Interesting Finding
A separate and, in the view of several developmental psychologists, considerably more robust and theoretically interesting family-dynamics finding than the birth-order-and-personality literature concerns what researchers call “sibling deidentification” — a well-documented tendency for siblings, and particularly siblings close in age, to actively and often unconsciously differentiate themselves from one another by deliberately pursuing distinct interests, activities, and areas of achievement, rather than competing directly within the same domain where an older or otherwise advantaged sibling has already established a strong reputation within the family. Research on this phenomenon, including studies by developmental psychologists such as Frits Boer and colleagues who have conducted controlled research specifically examining sibling similarity and difference across various developmental domains, has found that siblings are, on several measured dimensions of interest, personality, and vocational aspiration, less similar to one another than would be predicted by their shared genetic relatedness and shared family environment alone, a pattern consistent with an active, if often unconscious, process of within-family differentiation.
This finding offers a genuinely interesting alternative or supplementary explanation for at least some documented cases of siblings achieving eminence in entirely distinct fields — rather than reflecting a deep, inherent psychological consequence of specific birth-order position per se, sibling deidentification suggests that once one sibling has established a strong family reputation or head start in a particular domain, subsequent siblings may be actively, if not always fully consciously, incentivized to seek out a different domain in which to establish their own distinct identity and achievement, a more socially and strategically grounded mechanism than the more deterministic personality-trait claims associated with classical birth-order theory.
The Balanced Conclusion
The scientific literature on birth order, taken as a whole across nearly a century of research spanning Adler’s original clinical theorizing, Sulloway’s influential but methodologically contested historical synthesis, and the more recent and considerably more rigorous large-sample survey research, supports a modest and specific conclusion rather than the sweeping personality-determining claims that continue to circulate in popular psychology and parenting advice: birth order shows a small, well-replicated, and resource-dilution-explained effect on average cognitive test performance, essentially no reliable effect on broad personality traits including the openness dimension most closely associated with creative and intellectual achievement, and a more interesting, if less deterministic, potential role in shaping which specific domain of achievement a given sibling pursues, through the process of active family-role differentiation — considerably more modest and considerably more nuanced findings than either the popular stereotypes or the more dramatic historical claims examined in this article would suggest.
