ARTICLE 46 — THE HUMAN WITH UNUSUAL PAIN PERCEPTION
Pain is protective.
It warns the body that damage may be occurring.
Yet pain perception varies substantially among individuals.
A hypothetical mutant with dramatically altered pain processing presents a paradox.
The Advantage
Reduced pain could allow someone to continue functioning despite injuries.
They might tolerate procedures or physical stress that others find unbearable.
But this apparent advantage contains an enormous danger.
Pain as Information
If the warning system disappears, damage can accumulate unnoticed.
A person could continue using an injured limb.
They might fail to recognize dangerous physiological changes.
The absence of pain does not mean the absence of damage.
The Superhuman Without Pain
A fictional superhuman might appear nearly invulnerable because they do not react to injury.
In reality, reduced pain would not automatically produce stronger tissue.
The body could still fracture, tear, burn, or become infected.
A Better Superpower
The more interesting hypothetical ability would be precise pain control.
The individual could reduce unnecessary suffering while retaining enough sensory information to recognize danger.
Instead of eliminating pain, they would regulate it.
That would represent a much more sophisticated form of biological control.
